Plan B - there is a better way

In this 30 minute clip Dr Rosie Bennyworth (first 15 minutes) talks about an experiment in Somerset which has transformed the systems approach to supporting people.  No referrals, no criteria, no plan - just understanding people in the context of how they live their life and a willingness to design responses that solve the real problems people have.  The results are staggering for patients, for staff and for the cost of the system.

Andy Brogan (second 15 minutes) then talks about the counter-intuitive truths we have learned with our clients in applying the Vanguard Method in health to date; how the NHS does not have a productivity challenge but an effectiveness challenge and how a focus on efficiency leads to more of the Nicholson Challenge to solve.

Both talk about how the NHS does what the evidence tells us not to do and that transformation from that perspective means we focus on doing the wrong things faster, leaving us with more of the wrong things to do whilst ignoring the needs of patients in the process.  Both highlight the tremendous opportunity in approaching the design and management of work in a completely different way.

There is a better way.  It is happening now, but requires leaders to change the way they think.  It is their greatest leadership challenge.  Lets hope they are up to it.
